ALBERT MARTINEZ is celebrating his 57th birthday on April 19 and he already got his advanced birthday gift. He finally met his first grandchild, Adalynn Riley, daughter of his first born, Alyanna, who was married to graphic artist-photographer Roy Macam in 2016. Alyanna (who’s an American citizen as she was born in the U.S.) and her husband are now based in the U.S.
The baby was born on January 19 yet, but it’s only now that Albert found time to visit her in the States as he’s been busy doing one Kapamilya soap after another. He flew to the U.S. with his two other kids, Alfonso and Alyssa, who also saw their niece for the first time. It was a happy reunion for all of them. “This is my best award ever,” says Albert. “Nakakalungkot lang na hindi siya naabutan ni Liezl.”
His late wife Liezl Sumilang passed three years ago after a bout with the big C and Albert says he’s still grieving over losing her up to now. “Ang sarap pala maging lolo,” says Albert, who says he relishes a grandfather so much as it gives him another reason for living. “I really enjoy carrying and cuddling her. Buti na lang at hindi pa nangingilala. On leave muna si Alyanna sa pag-aalaga. I’m an expert in changing diapers dahil sa tatlo kong anak.”
He will be staying with Alyanna and baby for over a month and will be back in May to participate in a worthy project, “Expedition Philippines: Oversea Overland Adventures”, that aims to help preserve our country’s ecological systerms and environment. It will start on May 14. He will have to resume shooting for his movie with Jolo Revilla, “72 Hours”.
