Cinemalaya entries

AMONG THE directors who are now doing films for Cinemalaya, only Joel Lamangan is about to finish his entry, "Sigwa", about political activists in the 70s who meet again 30 years later, with a star-studded cast led by Gina Alajar, Dawn Zulueta, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Tirso Cruz III, Marvin Agustin, Pauleen Luna, Lovi Poe, Allen Dizon, and Megan Young. "Four days na lang kami, tapos na," Joel says.

Gil Portes' is just about to start his own entry, "Two Funerals" starring Tetchie Agbayani and Xian Lim in a road movie that takes them from Aparri to Sorsogon. We think he should replace the title. He did "Mourning Girls" before and it flopped. Mourning and funerals are not exactly that attractive in film titles, are they?

One ambitious entry is "Ang Paglilitis kay Andres Bonifacio", which is a period film so it'll entail higher production cost. This is from Mario O'Hara and he'll start shooting this month. He's getting Alfred Vargas as Bonifacio and Coco Martin as Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo. He's now auditioning new female stars to play Bonifacio's wife, Gregoria de Jesus. He originally wants to get Angel Locsin, but she's not available. We think Precious Lara Quigaman will be perfect for the role. And she can act, too.

Also a contestant is noted filmmaker of gay-oriented films, Jay Altarejos. His entry is "Pink Halo-Halo", about a child's perception of the war in Mindanao. A boy (Meljun Guinto of "Bakal Boys"), while watching TV, sees his soldier dad wounded and crying for help in Mindanao. Playing his parents are Allen Dizon and Angeli Bayani, with Perla Bautista as his lola.
