Loren Legarda tackles climate change in Buhos

VICE PRESIDENTIABLE Loren Legarda has joined forces with internationally acclaimed director Dante Mendoza to do an eye-opening docu on global warming, "Buhos (Downpour)", based on the experiences of people victimized by the floods of Ondoy and Pepeng. It's produced and directed by Sen. Loren who's a UN Champion for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation. So how did their partnership start?

"After he won as best director for 'Kinatay' in the Cannes Filmfest, I authored a resolution in the senate to commend him for the honor he brought to our country," she says. "Then text-text kami, he invited me sa premiere ng 'Kinatay' but I didn't make it. Nagkita kami sa Polo Club, kuwentuhan, and I told him about my passion for the environment."

"To be honest, I wasn't that hot on climate change," says Dante. "I was curious about her passion for it, then Ondoy and Pepeng happened and she took me with her to her rescue operations and medical missions in areas affected by the floods. It was an eye-opener for me and I started taping her missions. I've collected about some 30 hours of footage and we're now editing that to be 'Buhos' which premieres in May."

"I'm also convincing him to do another docu on El Nino," adds Loren. "I'll take him to Cagayan province where rivers went dry and ricefields are now so parched, bitak-bitak talaga, para mapakita how we can help prepare farmers for events like this. Also to the tent city of Pepeng victims in Botolan, Zambales. Kawawa mga tao roon living in tents. So much money was sent by foreign governments, dapat natayuan na sila ng housing doon, but the money meant for them goes to the national government."

Loren doesn't want to answer any questions about political muckraking. "I'm sick of all the siraan in politics. I want to focus on something positive and 'Buhos' is a film that will help our people realize we should all do something positive to help save our planet and stop the worsening state of our environment."
