First MTRCB awards for Films

FREEHAND by Mario E. Bautista

MTRCB CHAIR CONSOLIZA Laguardia formally announced the first MTRCB Awards for films to be held on June 25, 7 PM at Crossroads Convenarium, 77 Mother Ignacia Ave. QC hosted by Butch Francisco and Jackie Aquino. "We've honored TV last year, so films naman ngayon," she says. "There will be three best films: best action-fantasy, best comedy and best drama. There'll also be best actor and actress, best director, best supporting actor and actress, best screenplay, but only one technical award, best cinematography. The nominees will be announced a week before the awards night. Our lifetime achievement awardee is Mother Lily Monteverde. Her Regal Films has been around for four decades and she continues to inspire others to keep on producing even now that local film industry has slowed down. She has also produced some of the best films in local cinema."

Ms. Laguardia is now on her 7th year as chair, one of the longest MTRCB heads ever. What were the biggest problems she encountered in her term? "Sa films, yung 'Da Vinci Code' protest, kasi even before it was shown, all sectors were already against it. Sa TV, yung controversy kina Joey de Leon and Willie Revillame. Masyado silang sensitive when it's nothing personal naman for me kasi I just based it on the complaints against them. But as whole, I enjoyed my being at the MTRCB."

Does she wish for the new president to extend her stay? "My attitude is bahala na kung anong ibigay ni Lord. It's the prerogative of the new president. If he'd extend me, I'm still willing to serve."

JC DE VERA is obviously very happy with TV 5. "I can feel mas mahal nila talaga ko rito," he says. "They give me so much importance. I do comedy in 'Lokomoko U' and I do hosting and dance in 'Po5', and now, heto ang bagong challenge dahil puro action roles ang pinagawa nila sa'kin in 'TV5 Star Specials'."

He's excited with his six-week stint in TV5's "5 Star Specials" with two one-hour episodes and two 2-hour episodes that could very well be pilots for a new teleserye. The first episode to air this Wednesday at 8:30 PM is "Tato. 45" where he plays a hired killer named Tato whose specialty is calibre .45. He is merciless when it comes to murder but his conscience gets the better of him when ordered to kill an innocent 8-year old girl witness to a crime. This is megged by GB Sampedro with Gardo Versoz and Rocky Gutierrez as special guests, with the band Letter Day Story providing its own soundtrack led by their single "Sama-Sama". The other one-hour episode is "Kardong Kamao" about a streetfighter. JC himself thought of its concept.

Directed by Robert Quebral, he plays a cigarette vendor who turns out to be an expert in streetfighting with Danita Paner as special guest. The first two-hour episode is "Johnny Salamangkero" where he plays a magician who's also a vampire. His guest victims are Carla Humphries, Michelle Madrigal and Charee Pineda, directed by Argel Joseph. The last two-hour episode is "Gabriel Molave at ang Mahiwagang Arnis", megged by Eric Quizon for which he trained how to do arnis. Tonight, he's also the special guest in "Pidol's Wonderland" as the mysterious Prinsipe Abraham who's always sleeping with Diane Medina and Valeen Montenegro as his leading ladies.

How does he feel that his manager's slander case against GMA exec Wilma Galvante has been affirmed by the DOJ? "I'm happy kasi it proves na hindi po ako nagsisinungaling doon sa testimony ko roon na talagang siniraan sa'kin si Tita Annabelle as my manager."

AT THE LAUNCH of his new pizza commercial, John Lloyd Cruz expressed dismay over the stories that continue to be concocted about his checkered lovelife. Although he's often seen with Shaina Magdayao these days, it's said he cannot admit it in the open as he still cannot fully decide who's his real squeeze between her and Ruffa Gutierrez, who was reportedly seen biking with him at the Fort recently. "In other words, pinalalabas nilang namamangka ako sa dalawang ilog," he says. "Walang ganun. Yung kay Ruffa, walang katotohanan yun. The truth is ni halos wala na kaming communication mula ng lumipat siya sa ibang istasyon at naging very busy sa marami niyang programa."

This is also what Ruffa has been saying, stressing that she's single and unattached these days. But it seems the press would not believe them. "Wala na bang mas importanteng balita na of national importance kaysa sa buhay naming mga artista?" ask John Lloyd. "Tanggap ko ng bilang artista, part yan ng profession na pinasok namin, but still, I'm sure there are issues na mas dapat nating bigyan ng pansin na mas worth kaysa sa lovelife namin. Makakatulong ba talaga sa ikauunlad ng bansa yang paulit-ulit na tanong tungkol kay Ruffa or Shaina?"

CONGRATS TO The PBB Teens of Clash of 2010 for their wonderful performances at the Big Goal Concert held last Thursday at Kuya's house. Highlights of the night include Ryan, Ivan, Devon, Fretzie and Jenny singing Lady Gaga’s "Telephone," Ryan and Jenny’s modern ballet interpretation of "Nothing on You," and Bret and Fretzie’s duet of an original song composed by Bret. The whole group also did "I'll Be There for You," theme song of the sitcom "Friends". The Big Goal Concert is a fund-raising event performed in and mounted by the teen housemates for the benefit of the Philippine delegation to the Homeless World Cup in Brazil. It sold 33 Gold Seats worth P10,000 each and the Big Goal Package of souvenirs worth P500 each sold out with 500 reservations. The gold seat holders were given VIP treatment and were allowed to tour Kuya's house and take pictures with thouse housemates, with a sumptuous prepared for them also.

PBB was recently recognized in the first Sybil Awards of STRAP (Society of Transsexual Women of the Philippines) for pushing for the rights of transgenders in PBB Double Up that featured transgender Rica Paras as a housemate. Don't miss the last two weeks of PBB Teens on PBB Uber with Mariel, PBB primetime with Toni and PBB Update with Bianca.

Meantime, Ivan Dorschner and Ann Li were reprimanded by Big Brother for kissing lips to lips twice while playing a game in a recent episode, as initiated by Joe Vargas. It's now posted on youtube. One female housemate correctly intuited when she warned them: "Lagot kayo kay Kuya". Kuya indeed got angry and ordered everyone to enter the confession room. He's worried about the implications of this act especially to the self-appointed guardians of our morality. This kissing episode was understandably not shown on air. We're just wondering why no one among the staff intervened while the kiss was still being planned so they could have avoided it.
