LOVI POE gives an impressive and intense performance as the young Beth Oropesa in “
Beauty Queen” that starts tonight on GMA-7. “Madugo ang pilot week namin as it establishes the various characters in the story and the conflicts between them,” says Director Joel Lamangan. “Lovi and Iwa Moto are the top contestants as Bb. Isla Pilipinas. Lovi wins and she’s seen crying. They think it’s out of happiness but it’s actually because she was raped the night before by James Blanco. When she got pregnant, she was dethroned and she blames her baby. Lovi maltreats the girl from childhood as the reason for her kamalasan, hanggang maging Iza Calzado na ito at si Lovi naman, si Beth na. Iwa becomes Carmi Martin at rivals pa rin sila ni Beth kahit tumanda na sila. Carmi pushes her favorite daughter Maggie Wilson to compete sa beauty pageant. Yung isang daughter pa niya, si Katrina Halili, di niya gaanong pinapansin.
Iza as Maita becomes attached to her gay uncle, Anya, played by Jay Aquitania noong bata pa and later, by Bembol Roco, na ang husay-husay rito in his first gay role. As kids, Iza and Maggie become rivals in a beauty pageant for kids, pero kahit magkaaway ang mga ina nila, they become good friends. I’m sure magre-rate ito as Pinoys love beauty pageants.”
Iza is thankful that it’s Joel who’s directing “Beauty Queen”. “I trust him so much kasi I won my first best actress award for his political film, ‘Dukot’. Inspired ako umarte pag siya ang director ko.”
