THE TRIO OF Maricris Garcia, Aicelle Santos and Jonalyn Viray, collectively known as La Diva, is really making waves. They just performed yesterday at the Global Village’s World Culture Stage in Dubai as part of the group’s concert series, giving the Filipino workers there a big Christmas treat.
“Personally, I want our group to last,” says Maricris. “I always tell Aicelle and Jonalyn na ‘sana tumagal tayo like the APO.’ Kasi mas maraming nasisiyahan when they see us perform together.”
All three of them are winners in GMA-7’s “Pinoy Pop Superstar” with relatively successful solo careers, yet found the bigger success when they bonded together as La Diva, experiencing a career turning point on global TV when they sang the Philippine National Anthem at the Manny Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto fight in Vegas last year. Their beautiful harmonies set the tone for the country’s greatest boxing hero winning over his opponent.
In this year’s “Aliw Awards,” La Diva won the Best Group Performance in a Concert award for their first major concert last year “Only La Diva”. “Winning such awards motivated us more to give good music and work harder. The feeling is so overwhelming and everything was unexpected,” says Aicelle. Formed in 2008, La Diva has a 10-track album that include themes for GMA-7’s high-rating TV series such as “Rosalinda,” “Ang Babaeng Hinugot Sa Aking Tadyang,” “Basahang Ginto,” and “Queen Seon Deok”. Their interpretation of Guy Sebastian’s “Angels Brought Me Here” had become their signature hit.
