WHEN MANNY Pacquiao wins or oil firms roll back prices, good news gets top billing. But positive headlines like these are few and far between. Other feel-good and inspiring news items don’t always get enough attention. That’s what GMA News TV aims to change when it launched “Good News with Vicky Morales”, the first and original all-good news program in the country that focuses only on positive news around us. Inquirer columnist Nestor Torre said it’s “a welcome change of pace from all of the negative newscasts on the tube,” commending “the spirit of initiative by looking for inspirational stories not usually given the time of day by more aggressively ‘shock value’-oriented shows.” Such stories range from environmental projects like cleaning up rivers and “no-plastic” days in various cities and municipalities, to free medical services for indigent and elderly patients to the rise in the number of job vacancies in 2011. It also features achievements of Pinoys abroad like the two Fil-Am actors in the new “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie, and the Pinoy composer of the new Hongkong Disneyland theme. Other stories reflect the positive attitudes of Filipinos like that of the honest airport porter who returned thousands of dollars to a balikbayan OFW or the brave little boys who joined the thousands of others in the free circumcision project in Marikina. Bea Binene, who also shows stories that benefit child viewers like free summer clinics in Makati or the successful corneal transplant on a toddler. Indeed, good news is all around if only one knew where to look. It seems the positive vibe is even catching on for copycats are already reportedly in the works. Still, it was GMA News TV's Good News program that started it all every Sunday, 8 pm, on GMA News TV Channel 11.
