Director Quark Henares new film Rakenrol is 5 years in the making

WE’RE GLAD Director Quark Henares’ film, “Rakenrol”, is finally complete and will close the Cinemalaya Filmfest on July 23, 9pm, along with a concert at Harbour Square next to CCP featuring bands like Itchyworms, Ciudad, Taken by Cars, Pedicab, Techy Romantics, Halik ni Gringo, Arigato Hato. “It’s my most personal film and took me 5 years to finish as my homage to local rock music,” says Quark who’s in the news these days due to his warnings to Hayden Kho that “there will be blood” if Kho would fool his mom again after their wedding. Quark started as a director with “Gamitan” (Maui Taylor) and “Keka” (Katya Santos) for Viva and “Super Noypi” for Regal. “Rakenrol” stars Glaiza de Castro and Jason Abalos as outsiders who become good friends because of their common love for rock n’ roll. They form a band called Hapipaks with the barista Mo (Ketchup Eusebio) and the school bully Jun4 (Alwyn Uytingco). Also in the cast is Diether Ocampo as rockstar Jacci Rocha who tries to steal Glaiza from Jason, Ramon Bautista as MTV director Flame Tigerbluden, Ricardo Cepeda as a samurai marketing guru, Jun Sabayton as Ketchup’s roommate, Hiyasmin Neri as Alwyn’s pregnant girlfriend and Matet de Leon as herself. Quark co-wrote the film with former bandmate Diego Castillo, who says the film is very autobiographical as it’s a chronicle of the things they’ve seen in the local rock music scene through the years. “Rakenrol” opens in theatres on August 10 . It already won acclaim at the Udine Far East Filmfest, Los Angeles Asian Pacific Filmfest and has been to film festivals in Hawaii, Göteborg, San Diego and New York. It won the Audience Choice award in LA and the top Asian film site Film Business Asia called the film "a lightly comic charmer that's sustained by its likeable leads and easygoing, big-hearted style."
