IF THERE’S one director who should also work in front of the camera, it’s Lino Cayetano, who made the first “Starstruck” a big hit on GMA-7. After that, he moved to ABS-CBN where he got to meg soaps like ‘Mga Anghel na Walang Langit’, ‘Tanging Yaman’, ‘Noah’ and ‘Maalaala Mo Kaya’ episodes. Since he’s identified with youth-oriented shows, he now directs the new show of Kathryn Bernardo and Julia Montes, “Growing Up”, to be shown Sundays after ASAP starting September 4. How come he was away for sometime? “In 2008, I continued my film studies in New York U,” he says. “I returned here in 2009 and joined the group of Sir Deo (Endrinal).”
How did he recruit the cast of “Growing Up”? “Kathryn and Julia, part na talaga ng show. Mahirap magbuo ng teen cast and it tooks a month of auditions para sa mga makakasama nila. Daniel Padilla (son of Karla Estrada and Rommel Padilla) has very good chemistry with Kathryn. Diego Loyzaga naman (son of Cesar Montano and Teresa Loyzaga), nakasama na nila sa ‘Mara Clara’. Then we got Kiray Celis as she’s a good comedian. Siya lang ang may boyfriend in the story, newcomer EJ Fallurin, who has gender issues at confused if he’s gay or not. Neil Coleta is a good leading man and comedian and he’s paired with Yen Santos of PBB. We had a workshop before taping. Kasi sina Julia, galing sa heavy dramang ‘Mara Clara’ so dapat iwanan muna nila yun as ‘Growing Up’ is something more light and refreshing. The story is set in a seaside community and we tape in Subic. Angat sa cast sina Kathryn and Julia but this is really a barkada story and the issues that young people today experience. Lahat, sila may back story about their families. Kathryn has a single dad, Gerald Madrid, while Julia has a single mom, Angel Jacob. Kasama rin si Maricar Reyes as their teacher who’s sick so they help raise money for her treatment. I’m sure young viewers will be able to relate with the show.”
He megged Kim and Gerald in a film that was worth watching. Would he want to do another movie? “Yes, I’m thinking nga of doing an indie film for my growth.” Would he be willing to direct ex-GF KC Concepcion? “Yes, okay lang, no problem to work with her in the future.”
