Will winning Dragon Boat be as popular as Azkals?

THE PHILIPPINE DRAGON Boat team deserves a hero’s welcome after winning five golds at the 10th International World Racing Championships in Florida. It’s just too bad that the Filipino paddlers don’t get any incentives from the Philippine Olympic Committee as they’re not considered national athletes. Still, they deserve our admiration and it seems they’ve replaced the Azkals whose luster seems to have weakened after they lost to Kuwait. But at least, showbiz is beckoning the Azkals. Some of them just did their first movie, “Tween Academy: Class of 2010”, where they appear with Bea Binene. Will showbiz also lure the dragon rowers? We don’t think so, because they look so Pinoy not as young and movie-star handsome as the Azkals or the rugby team of the Volcanoes who both got offers to be underwear ad models. Even among the Azkals and the Volcanoes, the ones who get a lot of attention are the mestizos from England or Australia. The Pinoy-looking ones don’t get as much share of the limelight. And that's the sad fact.
