GARDO VERSOZA is one lucky guy. Just as his character, Rajah Mangubat, dies in “Amaya”, he re-emerges right away in the new afternoon soap, “Ikaw Lang ang Mamahalin” as the doting father of tween star Barbie Forteza. “Nagpapasalamat ako sa GMA-7 at sunod-sunod ang trabaho ko sa kanila,” he says. “Kaya naman ganado ako to always give my best.”
In “Amaya”, he is killed by the usurper Angaway (Ryan Eigenmann), who’s assisted in this dastard deed by Ryan’s real life mom, Gina Alajar as Lamitan, and also supported by other men who rebelled against Gardo’s tyrannical rule, led by Mon Confiado as Songil, AJ Dee as Paratawag and Rob Sy as Paragahin. Obviously, the creative team behind “Amaya” (Director Mac Alejandre and head writer Suzette Doctolero) changed its mind about Mangubat and Amaya as the earlier prediction touted in its promo is that Amaya, as the woman born with a twin snake, is destined to kill Mangubat as an act of vengeance as he earlier killed her father, Datu Bugna (Raymond Bagatsing.)
Now, Gina twists facts and makes it appear that it’s Marian Rivera as Amaya who killed Gardo. Since the story transpires in the 1500’s, you’d see a very intricate process of mourning and burial practiced by tribal people of that era when their leader dies. Gardo’s remains will ultimately be set on fire while floating on a well decorated raft on a river. This is all shown in “Amaya” and the budget soared because of all the props and implements needed, but GMA-7 doesn’t mind as long as they remain authentic to the ancient rituals and ceremony they’re portraying on screen.
There’ll also be new interesting developments in the show. A new character to be introduced will be played by young Kapuso hunk Aljur Abrenica who’s excited to work on a soap again after “Machete”.
