RICHARD GUTIERREZ is leaving on September 18 to host “Survivor Philippines Celebrity Showdown 2” but before that, he just completed another environmental docu, “Oras Na”, to be shown on October 17 while he’s still away.
Where’s the venue of the new “Survivor”? “Sorry but I can’t reveal it,” he says. “Abangan nyo na lang.” How come DJ Mo is saying it’s just in Palawan? “No, its’ not.”
He also won’t mention any names of the new castaways but we heard that this time, they would be couples: like husband and wife, parent and child, or brothers-sisters. So he’s not doing any new soap?
“Hindi muna, baka next year na. When I return, I want to do a movie, something different.”
For Valentine? Is it his reported reunion with Angel Locsin? “No, not necessarily for Valentine. The movie with Angel, di matutuloy since she’s starting a new one with ABS. Mahirap, we come from different networks now so iba ang priorities. But I miss working with her. I hope we’d get the chance to team up again.”
Is “Oras Na” as significant as his past docus like “Signos”, “Wildlife for Sale” and “Planet Philippines” that all won awards here and abroad? “Yes, we try to top them. We show that the earth is on a deadline. Experts predict that at the rate we’re going, virgin forests will be wiped out by 2025 and there’ll be a shortage of fresh water. By 2030, oil will run out and by 2050, marine resources will also run out leading to a food crisis. We show footage of actual situations in Surigao, Bohol and the Cordilleras. I join a fisherman in Antique as he goes fishing. He said ten years ago, he can catch a kilo of fish in an hour. Now, three hours kami sa laot na nahilo ako sa lakas ng alon, tatlong isda lang ang nahuli namin. We should all be alarmed. To show something positive, I visit the Bugang River in Pandan, Antique, the cleanest river now in the country as its source is a deep underground spring. Maiinom mo talaga ang tubig doon.”
About his lovelife, is it true his new girl is a pretty student at the Big Foot Studios in Cebu? “Sorry, wrong info.”
So who’s his inspiration now? “The environment. I’m inspired by the need to protect it before it’s too late.”
