BEFORE RICHARD Gutierrez left for the location shoot of “Survivor Philippines Celebrity Showdown 2” in some distant island, he finished recording a special docu for his “Anatomy of a Disaster” series. This one focuses on the frightening effects of landslides caused by soil erosion due to deforestation. Entitled “Takas sa Guho”, tells the story of the villagers whose houses were buried in a landslide in St. Bernard, Leyte on Feb. 17, 2006. The whole village disappeared from the map, buried under thick mud, soil and rocks from a nearby mountain that collapsed after heavy rains.
“Entire families perished in that disaster,” says Richard. “Up to now, there’s enough danger of the same thing happening in other mountainous towns during the rainy season due to the neglect of our environment.”
Richard traces how landslides happen and offers solutions on what we can do to stop such terrible tragedies. No wonder he’s now considered a champion of the environment. Aside from the Leyte tragedy, he offers other similar incidents from an international docu on landslides and avalanches. Don’t miss this enlightening eye-opener to be shown tonight on GMA-7’s “Sunday Night Box Office.”
