Sitti all set to prove she's not just good in Bossa Nova

BOSSA NOVA QUEEN Sitti just arrived last Friday from the States where she did a 6-city concert tourt with the ASAP Sessionistas and quickly proceeded to her rehearsal for her solo concert at the Music Museum this Friday, “Ang AKing Awitin”. How was their concert tour? “We had shows in Chicago, Anaheim, Las Vegas, Reno, and Alaska,” she says. “Dapat meron din sa New York, but it was called because of the super typhoon Irene. Magandang reception sa’min because they see us in ASAP.”

Sitti is using the family name of her mom, Navarro, but her real surname is Baidin. Has she maintained communication with her Muslim dad after they met in Tawi-Tawi several months ago? “Oh yes, we text each other. I have three younger siblings with his family there. I’m inviting him here to Manila but takot bumiyahe as he has a heart ailment. I just want to correct na my dad is not a Tausug like what’s reported by others. He’s a member of the Mapun Tribe.”

Her “Ang Aking Awitin” concert this Friday at the Music Museum is something special for her as she aims to show that she’s not just good in bossa songs. “May bossa numbers din but it’s really more a tribute to OPM singers, bands and composers. Excited ako as I’ve never done an all OPM show before. This is a follow up to my new album, ‘Sitti Sessions’, that is also all OPM, including two songs I myself composed, to show a different side of me. My guests are Rico Blanco, Duncan Ramos and Jett Pangan, directed by Calvin Neria. Naiiba rin ang concert na ito as I’ll be dancing with the Whiplash Dancers as backup. Bale celebration din ito ng 10th year ko sa pagkanta. I was 16 when I started singing sa lounges like Stone House. Six years ago naman, I launched my first album na nag-hit at sinundan ng five other hit albums.”

She has acted on TV and almost did a movie. “Dapat, kasama ko sa ‘Emir’, but nataon ang shoot sa U.S. concert tour ko two years ago. Then this time, dapat, nasa Broadway musical din akong ‘In the Heights’, pero nagka-concert din ako sa States. I really want to do another play sana after I did ‘Spring Awakening’ for Atlantis Productions.”

Tickets to Sitti’s show ranging from P800 to P1,500 are at Ticketworld (891-9999), Music Museum (721-6720) and Backroom (435-1098). For inquiries about Sitti, call Backroom or email them at backroomtalents@pldtdsl.net.
