WE WENT TO the special screening of the Palawan anniversary episode of “Maalaala Mo Kaya” with Angel Aquino playing the role of anti-mining activist Salvacion “Boggs” Villanueva. Directed by Cannes Filmfest best director Dante Mendoza and shot on location in Palawan, this is an advocacy episode showing the ill effects of mining that destroys ricelands and waterways in Palawan.
Angel gives a touching performance, along with Yul Zervo as her husband farmer who’s initially resistant to her being an activist but later supported her totally when his own farm was polluted by mining. Also in the cast are Paul Salas and Miles Ocampo as their kids who felt their mom devotes more time to her crusades than to them.
The real Boggs was present during the screening and she cried buckets of tears when she was asked later to speak in front, thanking everyone connected with the production and supporting her fight in Palawan. Gina Lopez, ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. managing director, later took centerstage and showed through videos and slides how irresponsible mining is ruining the pristine beauty of Palawan.
She’s spearheading a campaign for 10 million signatures to stop the mining there and we really admire her energy and passion in pursuing this very valid and noble cause. She takes a pot shot on Pres. Ninoy who said we the people are his bosses but has agreed for destructive mining to go on in our islands. She believes 10 million signatures will convince politicos about her plea to stop mining. She said that three years ago, it was 5 million signatures that convinced ex-Pres. GMA to stop the construction of a subdivision on top of the La Mesa Dam watershed that would surely pollute our water supplies. We Filipinos should really support Gina Lopez and sign her petition to preserve the ecology of our country and prevent foreign companies from exploiting our natural resources.
