IN THE EARLY days of radio, DJ’s are folks you call up and say “Can I make a request?” Not anymore. Now, they perform a host of functions on the air, combining music and talk for crazy and fun entertainment to lighten up the listener’s day. Barangay LS FM 97.1’s TugStugan Na campaign is anchored on this. DJ Papa Dudut says tugs is the sound that comes from the sound system during parties. “We wish to penetrate all the stereos in Mega Manila,” he says. “That means giving other FM stations a run for their money in the ratings game. Our aim is to be number one.”
Papa Dudut is Rensmark Jairuz Ricafrente in real life, the third DJ from Lucena we’ve interviewed. He was a college sophomore at Southern Luzon State University when he became a part time DJ in Lucena. In 2008, he moved to Manila and now does “Balita sa Barangay” for Barangay LS. One of the most unforgettable experiences he had since he hosted this is having a 15-year old blind special child as his most ardent fan. “She cries daw everytime she doesn’t hear our show. What we did is we asked her to celebrate her 16th birthday with us and that made her really happy.”
