IZA CALZADO does a balancing act in hosting a show like “Showbiz Exclusives”. “I’ve done hosting in ‘Sweet Life’ and ‘At Your Service’ but iba ito dahil tungkol sa mga kapwa ko artista,” she says. “At first, I was hesitant to do it but then, as long as wala akong intention na siraan ang isang artista, okay lang. We just want to deliver the latest news about them and I’ll try to be as neutral as possible. It shows another side of me, na hindi ako that serious at maloko rin akong tao.”
What if she’s asked to do a story that might hurt a friend? “Siempre, I will ask muna the side of my friend. I will always prioritize my friendship kasi the show will last only for a few seasons, but I might lose a friend for life. The difference of ‘Showbiz Exclusives’ is it’s more interactive. We involve viewers through Facebook and Twitter.”
Her last BF, Atticus King, who used to be so shy, bared his buff bod in the last Cosmo Bash. Is it his way of telling her: Look at what your missing? “Ay, buhay niya po yun, malaki na siya.” Looks like it’s a bad breakup. “No, we communicate naman. We talked and laughed about what he did. I respect the decisions he makes in his life.”
So has she found someone new? “None. And I’m enjoying it, pati yung wala akong new soap after ‘I Heart U Pare’. I wake up at 6 AM, workout, then go to host ‘Eat Bulaga’. I take voice and dance lessons and next month, I’ll take the Stella Adler acting workshop with two teachers who are coming here.”
How did she feel when ‘Andres de Saya’ was axed after just one season? “Of course, I felt bad about it. Sayang lang kasi we’re already having so much fun and it ended just as I was getting into the groove of doing comedy.”
She did a guest appearance in ‘The Kitchen Musical’. “It’s my friend Karylle who asked me to do it. I went to Singapore to shoot for one day. I play an actress with a funky hipster look. I had scenes with Christian Bautista and the other actors, but not with Karylle. It will be shown in the show’s week 7 or 8.” Is she really moving to TV5? “No, I’m about to renew my contract with GMA, we’re just ironing out some minor kinks.”
She just finished shooting ‘Ang Panday, Ikalawang Aklat’ for GMA FIlms as Maria Makiling. She hopes the offer to be in the next John Lloyd Cruz-Sarah Geronimo movie for Star Cinema would push through next year. “My first movie was also with Star Cinema, ‘Milan’. Cathy Molina was the assistant director then. Now, siya na magdidirek dun sa movie nina John Lloyd. Sana matuloy as I really like to work with other people.”
Assisting Iza in ‘Showbiz Exclusives’, shown Monday to Friday at 7 PM on GMA News TV Ch. 11, are entertainment correspondents Aubrey Carampel and Nelson Canlas. Aubrey will tie the knot with her longtime boyfriend, Michael Aricheta, on December 17 at the Sta. Rita de Casia Church in Philam, with reception at White Space in Makati. Our best wishes.
