Director Yam Laranas Avoids Old Horror Tricks In The Road

DIRECTOR YAM LARANAS tackles the ill effects of child abuse in his new horror flick, “The Road”, a trilogy that opens on Wednesday. It’s linked by a single character played by three different actors: TJ Trinidad in 2008, Alden Richards in 1998 and 13-year old Renz Valerio in 1988. “It’s not your usual thriller,” he says. “We try to avoid the same old techniques used in other horror films. Wala kaming elements like scary women with long hair or mga batang puting-puti so common in other Asian horror films. The scares here are grounded to the story. Wala nung basta nanggugulat na biglang may hahawak sa likod ng bida. My scriptwriter, Aloy Adlawan, and I made sure we offer something new. For one, the story here is told backwards, in reverse. When you watch the first episode, may mga tanong ka, but they’ll all be answered by the last episode.” Here is our initial movie review of the road.

The stretch of road referred to in the title was shot in Teresa, Rizal with the Sierra Madre looming in the distance. Yam wants to thank all his stars who gave good performances. “TJ holds the film together as he’s there from start to end. He’s very good, but mahusay rin sina Barbie Forteza, Lexi Fernandez and Derrick Monasterio sa first episode; Rhian Ramos, Alden Richards and Louise de los Reyes sa second; and Carmina Villaroel, Marvin Agustin and Renz Valerio sa final episode, with Jacklyn Jose as the mom of Rhian and Louise who continues to look for her missing there after so many years.”
