ERWIN TULFO is seen daily in two TV5 shows, “T3” with his brothers Raffy and Ben and the early primetime newscast at 6 PM, “Aksyon”. He’s also heard daily on his own radio program and seen in “Tutok Tulfo”. “Buti nga I was taken out of ‘Sapul’ (TV5’s morning show), for which I used to get up at 3 AM,” he says. “When Luchi Cruz Valdes asked me to work with TV5, she said she can’t afford what ABS was giving me na six-figures daw. Sabi ko, I don’t mind, I just want a job. I really love this job, I love what I’m doing, wala na akong alam na ibang gawin. This is the profession I want and for me, it’s a way of life. Dito na ko magre-retire.”
TV5 is very glad that after only 18 months, its flagship news program “Aksyon” has made a dent in primetime newscasting. “We’re happy with what we’ve accomplished so far,” says Erwin. “Nakasingit kami kahat bahagya sa habit ng viewers watching our rivals news shows. When we started, there was a lot of pressure kasi ang mga katapat namin, more established na. Up to now, it’s still a challenge everyday. We keep on reminding our reporters and cameramen that we have to be better, different, dahil mabibigat ang kalaban.”
With Erwin in “Aksyon” are Cheryl Cosim, who just won as best public service program host at the KBP Golden Dove for “Alagang Kapatid”, and Shawn Yao who does the showbiz news and the irrepressible Lourd de Veyra doing the weather report, “Weather Or Not”, with a twist as he dishes out his own editorials with wit and sarcasm in “Sabi ni Lourd”.
What do they think is their advantage over the anchors of the other stations, aside from their being younger? It’s Cheryl who answers: “Our edge is that we’re not just news readers based inside the studio. We really go out to pursue the news and you can see how committed and passionate we are in doing our work. We directly help people in need kaya nga Aksyon ang title namin. We do something for them.”
