JUSTICE SEC. LEILA de Lima has countless fans in the internet who praise her as a woman with cojones or balls for having the will to prevent Gloria Arroyo from escaping so she can face the charges against her. Arroyo cannot expect any sympathy from the public since all the signs she sends show she has no plans of returning to the county, like going to countries with no-extradition treaties with us, booking six simultaneous flights out of the country and being ready to pay P2 million in a jiffy when asked for a cash bond. We salute de Lima and do you know that she hails from the beautiful city of Iriga, same as Nora Aunor?
Iriga’s hardworking Mayor Madelaine Alfelor Gazmen was in town with her brother Ronald to announce big events happening in Iriga next year. Mayor Madel, an avid tennis fan, says that in February, they’ll host the famous International Davis Cup in tennis from February 10 to 12, 2012 to be held at the newly renovated Iriga Coliseum. It will gather all the best tennis players in the Asia Pacific Region, including our own Cecil Mamiit, a 5-time gold medallist in the SEAGames; Treat Conrad Huey, a Fil-Am counted among the top 60 ATP players; Ruben Gonzales, an ATP world-trained singles and doubles player; Jeson Patrombon, a junior Australian quarter finalist and Johnny Arcilla, a PCA 5-time Open Champion. This is the very first time such a big sports event will be held in the Bicol Region, and in Iriga at that when it used to just play support to Legaspi and Naga.
Also in February, Iriga will be host to the Bicol-wide Tinagba-Gayon Festival timed with its annual Harvest Festival that we attended last year. There will be contingents participating participating from the cities of Naga, Legaspi, Ligao, the provinces of Albay, Camarines Sur and Norte, Masbate, Sorsogon, Catanduanes, plus other towns and municipalities in Bicol. There will be a parade of spectacular floats and street dancing with participants in colorful costumes in a showdown on February 11. She’s on her last term so Mayor Gazmen is now completing the 7-hectare Eco-Adventure Park at Inorogan on the foot of Mount Iriga featuring a ZIP line, nerve-wracking rides and treks. It formally opens on Feb. 7, 2012 in time for both the the Davis Cup tournament and the Tinagba-Gayon Festival. There will also be an Extreme Bike Challenge on Feb. 5, Tourism Expo on Feb. 6, Youth Congress on Value Formation with inspirational speaker Francis Kong on Feb. 8, highlighted by a concert featuring Ely Buendia and stand-up comedian Juana Change, with the special participation of Derek Ramsay. Don’t miss it.
