IF THE ENTIRETY of “Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story” is as good as its trailer, then it might just be a potential award-winner in the Metro filmfest awards night. A period film set in 1950 when Tondo was a notorious killing field for warring gangs, it has great production design and cinematography. It’s obvious Laguna Gov. ER Ejercito (billed as Jeorge Estregan in the film) left no stone unturned to make sure it’ll be a good movie with Tikoy Aguiluz (“Segurista”, “Rizal sa Dapitan”) at the helm.
“This is an improvement over the past films on Asiong,” says Gov. ER. “We made intensive research about him and his era and we learned Asiong had a total of eight wives, aside from the first one, Fidela, played by Carla Abellana. When he died, two of them were pregnant, played by Valerie Concepcion and Jaycee Parker in our movie.”
What about the complaint of Phillip Salvador he’s not billed properly in the poster? “Lambingan lang namin yun. Mahaba ang pinagsamahan namin. Kuya Ipe ko siya, Bro, marami kaming pelikulang ginawa nung nagbibida pa siya at thankful akong sinuportahan niya ko rito at naging acting coach ko pa. If I’d win an award here, the credit should go to him and Direk Tikoy. Sa poster, una ang pangalan niya after the title then si Carla then ako. Wala kaming problema at nagkausap lang kami, he said he’ll help promote the movie. Kasama rin siya sa movie kong ‘El Presidente’.”
As for his complaint about Carla not allowed by Regal to promote the film, Mother Lily already issued an official statement about this saying she’s not mad at ER or Carla. Her complaint is against Carla’s manager, Arnold Vegafria, who she said didn’t even have the courtesy to inform her that Carla is doing a movie with ER when she’s under exclusive contract with Regal.
