THE METRO-MANILA FILMFEST awards night will be held tonight at Resorts World hosted by Ai Ai de las Alas. Fearless forecasters are saying that three serious, non-fantasy films will vie for the best picture award: “My Househusband”, “Yesterday Today Tomorrow” and “Manila Kingpin”. For best director, it should be just a tossup between Joey Reyes of ‘Househusband’ or Jun Lana of ‘Yesterday’ since Tikoy Aguiluz already had his name deleted from ‘Manila Kingpin’ poster and title credits.
But cynics say that since the panel jurors now have members who aren’t really experts on the art of cinema but common people like a bus driver, etc., then we should not expect serious films to win but popular ones with fantasy elements. So don’t be surprised if, just like year when “Tanging Ina Mo Rin” won most of the awards, history will repeat itself and “Enteng ng Ina Mo” will once again take home most of the trophies.
Still and all, for all its worth, here is the forecast as the most likely nominees in the other major categories. The first in the list is our personal choice as the most deserving to win.
For best supporting actor – Dennis Trillo in “Yesterday Today”, Phillip Salvador in “Panday 2” or “Manila Kingpin”.
Best supporting actress – Eugene Domingo in “My Househusband”, Lorna Tolentino in “Panday 2”, Carla Abellana or Solenn Heussaff in “Yesterday Today”, Angelica Panganiban in “Segunda Mano”.
Best actor – Ryan Agoncillo in “My Househusband”, Dingdong Dantes in “Segunda Mano”, or Jorge Estregan in “Manila Kingpin”.
Best actress – Judy Ann Santos in “My Househusband”, Maricel Soriano or Lovi Poe in “Yesterday Today”.
Best child actor – Bugoy Carino in “Tamawo” episode of “Shake Rattle & Roll 13”.
Awards for best production design, special effects and make up should definitely go to no other movie than “Panday 2” that really made an effort to excel in these technical aspects.
