Honors won abroad this year include: “Lola” of Dante Mendoza winning the best film award and the best actress awards for Anita Linda and Rustica Carpio at the Tehran International Filmfest. Richard Gutierez’ environmental docu “Planet Philippines” won the silver medal at the 32nd Telly Awards in New York. Loy Arcenas’ debut film “Nino” won the new current awards at the Busan International Filmfest in South Korea. Alvin Yapan’s “Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa” won the Bronze Circle Award in the Bogota International filmfest in Colombia. Jeffrey Jeturian’s “Bisperas” won best Asian-Middle Eastern film in the Tokyo International Filmfest.
Remton Zasuola’s “Damgo ni Eleuteria” won the special jury prize at Jeonju International Filmfest in South Korea and Golden Hanuman best Asian film award in Indonesia. Aureaus Solito’s “Busong” won the international critics prize at the Eurasia International Filmfest and the Tomorrow’s Cinema Award at the Brussels International Filmfest. Sheron Dayoc’s “Halaw” won the best picture award at the Hell Kitchen’s Filmfest in New York.
Stars who also deserve to be commended include Carmi Martin who graduated from college with a degree in fine arts and interior design at the age of 47 and Jodi Sta. Maria, Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson for their perseverance in getting a high school diploma no matter how busy they have become.
