Imee Marcos Produces Expensive Live-Animation Film, 'Pinta-Kasi' Starring Jm De Guzman, Erich Gonzales

WHILE WITH the Experimental Cinema of the Philippines in the 80s, Imee Marcos got to produce two of the best films in local cinema, “Himala” by Ishmael Bernal and “Oro Plata Mata” by Peque Gallaga. “Nabaliw-baliw kami noon sa crowd scenes ng ‘Himala’ shot in Vigan and the huge budget of Peque’s wartime movie na umabot sa P17 million, the most expensive that time, but it’s all worth it,” she says.

She now produces “Pinta-Kasi”, an indie entry in the Metro-Manila Filmfest New Wave category starring John Wayne Sace, JM De Guzman and Erich Gonzales. “This is three years in the making. When we started it, JM and Erich are not yet the big stars that they are now.”

Why is the title “Pinta-Kasi”? “It’s about warring gangs who fight like they’re engaged in a cockfight or pintakasi. But it’s also a play on words as John Wayne plays an artist who paints and everytime he dreams, the movie would go into animation. The film is a combination of live and animation. John Wayne arrives in this place where evil reigns and he becomes an agent of change, like Jose Rizal, to make the people better. Si JM naman is Tikboy, the contravida who’s the kingpin in that place, while Erich is the beautiful girl they love.”

Although it tackles a serious theme, “Pinta-kasi” is presented to please even young people. It’s full of hiphop music with an original soundtrack written by top music personalities. There’s also a lot street dancing performed by the acclaimed Philippine All Star dancers. It also stars Boots Anson Roa, Giselle Sanchez and William Martinez. Giselle has a wacky role.

“Asawa ko ni William, but it’ll be shown I had an affair with JM,” she says. “You’d see me making kaskas ng kalamansi sa katawan ko for whitening sa gitna na kaiskuwateran. I’m so proud to be part of this movie that imparts magagandang values in life.”
