My Cactus Heart Movie Review

WE SOMEHOW FEEL bad for Maja Salvador since there's no doubt she's one of the most capable among our young actresses today. But it seems like she doesn’t have enough fans who’ll support her movies at the box office. As we all know, her launching flick last year, “Thelma”, didn't do well at the box office and was quickly taken out of theaters, even if the movie was well directed by Paul Soriano and she delivers a very good performance that can merit her an acting nomination as best actress in any of the award-giving bodies this year.

Ngayon, heto’t kapapalabas lang ng kanyang “My Cactus Heart” and again, it failed to make waves at the box office. And to think that she is paired here with her real life boyfriend na si Matteo Guidicelli. Or it could be that Matteo has a negative image after he figured in a fight then with Coco Martin when he got jealous of Coco's kissing scenes with Maja in their former TV show. See article, Matteo Guidicelli Hopes To Face The Altar With Maja Salvador Someday.

“My Cactus Heart” is the story of Sandy (Maja Salvador), a young woman who does not believe in love dahil sa sariling masamang ehemplong nakita niya sa kanyang mga magulang na sina Ricky Davao at Rosanna Roces. She helps her mom to manage ang kanilang restaurant-flower shop. Dahil nga hindi siya naniniwala sa romansa, talagang mas gusto niya to just break as many hearts as she can.

Aside from being a singing waiter, vocalist din siya ng isang rock band.

Very predictable ang story, gaya ng iba pang romantic movies made by Star Cinema na ganitong uri ng pelikula ang siyang specialty. Parang sinugalan nila rito ang tambalang Maja-Matteo and obviously, hindi sila nagtagumpay, just like sa movie na ginawa nila for Erich Gonzales and Enchong Dee, “I Do, I Do”, na mahina rin sa takilya.

For us, wala sila talagang gaanong chemistry. Magaling si Maja and she looks so lovable on screen, but si Matteo, never ka maniniwalang he’s a poor guy and struggling singer. He has a very likable personality, but on screen, he looks so bland.

Sa simula ng movie, you’d think it’s also about the family kasi parehong binigyan ng magandang subplots ang mga magulang nina Maja at Matteo, lalo na si Ramon Christopher na pinatanda pa ang hitsura as Matteo’s aging dad na pinoproblema ang lumisan nitong asawa. But somewhere in the middle of the film, bigla na lang nalimutan ang mga magulang at hindi na muling lumitaw pa sina Rosanna Roces, Ricky Davao at Ramon Christopher. You’d really wonder kung ano na ang nangyari sa kanila after they were given importance at the start of the film.

The structure of the film is another thing. Then sa ending, there will be a twist in the story. At si Matteo na nagpunta sa Singapore for a singing engagement ay biglang nagbalik sa Manila to be reunited with Maja.

They use such manipulative plot mechanics para kiligin ang audience.
