Nyoy Volante'S Original Counterpart In Broadway Musical Will Be Here To Watch Him

NYOY VOLANTE plays the lead role of Uznavi, the narrator in the Broadway musical “In the Heights”. In the original presentation on Broadway, the one who played Uznavi was Lin Manuel Miranda, who also wrote the songs in the show. Nyoy is excited now that Atlantis Productions will do a repeat at Carlos Romulo Theatre in RCBC Plaza Makati because Lin Manuel is coming over to personally see how Filipinos are doing his Tony Award-winning play on the local stage.

“Kung magaling na ko noon, dapat mas galingan ko pa ngayong the author himself will be around to watch us,” says Nyoy. “The show was really a big challenge for me when we first staged it in September 2011 kasi the songs are hiphop. E, hindi naman ako sanay mag-rap as I’m an acoustic at R&B singer at ibang-iba rin ang plays I’ve done before like ‘Dreamgirls’, ‘Hairspray’ and ‘Legally Blonde’. But I’m glad okay naman ang feedback sa performance ko. As Uznavi, I was born in New York but I dream of going home to Puerto Rico. I’m paired with Ima Castro who plays Daniella.”

“In the Heights” is helmed by Bobby Garcia, with choreography by Cecile Martinez, set design by Mio Infante, lighting by Jay Aranda, costumes by Twinkle Zamora, vocal coaching by Manman Angsico and musical direction by Ceejay Javier. For tickets, call 892-7078.
