PINOY DREAM ACADEMY 2 graduate Hansen Nichols is a living miracle. When he was 18, he figured in a car crash in San Francisco, California. He was taken to a hospital and it was there that the doctors discovered he had a lump on his thyroid and it was stage 4 cancer. Instead of moping over his fate, he decided to fight it. He showed us the long scar near his collarbone where the cut was made to take the tumor out.
“The doctor told me I can never sing again,” he says. “I felt so bad as I really want to perform, so I fought hard and regained my voice. Six years ago, I came to Manila to pursue my dream of singing. I have an identical twin brother and he’s a member of the Screen Actors Guild in America. He has appeared in some TV shows. Ako, gusto ko rito. I joined the first season of Pinoy Dream Academy but I didn’t make it. I joined the second season at dun, nakapasok ako. The experience helped me a lot. Me and the other finalists got to tour the whole country to do concerts. Before I came here, I didn’t speak Tagalog, but now marunong na ako.”
As a matter of fact, he speaks it like a native, with no twang or accent at all. He has done some acting in “Maalaala Mo Kaya”, TV5’s “True Confessions” and the soap “Midnight Phantom”, but he wants to focus on singing. He’s now managed by Backroom who got him to do a series of one-hour shows for various branches of Pagcor all over the country.
He’ll have his first solo concert at the Metro Bar at West Ave. on March 14, Wednesday, 9 PM, “Hansen at the Metro”, with PDA colleagues Bugoy Drilon and Liesl Garcia, plus Bossa Nova Queen Sitti as his special guests.
“I’m excited as I’ve guested in other concerts before, but this is my first solo show. I’ll do pop songs and ballads, numbers from Bruno Mars and Rihanna to Martin Nievera and Ariel Rivera. I’ll be doing a lot of Tagalog songs and also some dancing. And the day after my concert, I fly to Davao to do a Pagcor show there on March 15.”
