GMA NETWORK’s top honcho Atty. Felipe Gozon has already denied in a meeting with the press that there’ll be a merger between them and TV5 but rumors continue to persist. The latest one to float around is that it’s not really a merger as what TV5 boss Manny Pangilinan wants is to buy out GMA. Someone even said it’s a done deal and they’re just waiting for the go signal of the National Telecommunications Commission to finalize everything for an official takeover in November. Atty. Gozon has also denied this November affair but we don’t know why some quarters won’t believe him. For us, though, we’ll just wait for November to find out if the rumors would be true.
Atty. Gozon answered other queries, like why they allow their talents to guest in other stations. “We’re not selfish. If we don’t have a project for them, we allow them to guest in other shows para kumita naman sila, lalo’t kung nagpapaalam naman ng maayos like Paolo Ballesteros. Iba ang case nina DJ Mo and Iwa Moto, who moved to TV5 nang may kontrata pa sila sa amin. Si Iwa, baka mademanda dahil we have to preserve the sanctity of the contract. Si Mo naman, kinasuhan na pero hindi naman umuuwi rito.”
Miss World Philippines had a great first year with them, with Gwen Ruais ending as first runnerup. How come it moved to TV5? Another exec, Bang Arespacochaga, explained that its contract with them was just for one year, so it has expired, then they got a bigger offer from TV5.
Atty. Gozon said their first quarter shows all turned out to be topraters. They are rating very high in Mega-Manila and Urban Luzon, but not so much in Visayas and Mindanao so they had a campaign sending their talents in the provinces to promote their shows and beef up their ratings there. And it’s paying off.
He’s confident they’ll soon top the ratings nationwide with their brand new shows for the new quarter of the year topped by “Protege: the Battle for the Big Artista Break” where the winners will win P12 million. Those that just started include “Luna Blanca”, “Makapiling Kang Muli”, “Daddy Dearest”, “One True Love” and “Kasalanan Bang Ibigin Ka?” that are all rating very well. Two new shows that will start next week are “Faithfully” and the Sunday afternoon show, “Together Forever” starring the Julie Ann San Jose-Elmo Magalona love team replacing “Tween Hearts”. In August, Jinkee Pacquiao will also have her own talk show “Love Life”.
