VINA MORALES is in cloud nine and we’re not surprised as some reviewers say her performance in the stage musical “Rock of Ages” is even better than the actress (Julianne Hough) who played the same lead role of Sheree in the Hollywood version. Also, the film version is a flop, but their stage version is a big hit among local theatre aficionados.
“Nakakatuwa talaga and I’m really so flattered sa lahat ng papuring natanggap ko as Sherrie,” she says. “Noong una, I was really so nervous as this is the first time I’m doing a play. But I’m thankful to our director, Chari Arespochaga, and all my co-stars like Nyoy Volante, Jett Pangan, Mig Ayesa, Jinky Llamanzares and all the others, dahil ang gagaling nila and they really inspire me to give my best.”
She says she used to be afraid of theatre. “Unlike sa TV or movies kasi, ang acting dito, walang take two.” It’ll be recalled that Vina started her showbiz career as a child of 10 discovered by Viva. As a teen star, she did movies and recorded albums that all did well. The stage is something she has always wanted to try but she was then too busy with movies, TV and concerts here and abroad.
“But with ‘Rock of Ages’, I think the right time for me to do a musical on stage is just perfect,” she says. “I love my role as a small town girl from Oklahoma who goes to Hollywood to pursue a career in showbiz. I get to sing some great songs like ‘More than Words’ and ‘Don’t Stop Believin’. I prepared hard for this. First, nag-gym ako’t nag-diet to make sure I’m in top shape as I’ll do some dancing in the show dahil magiging stripper din ako rito sa club ni Jinky Llamanzares. It’s really a very demanding role but I love its discipline and challenges so much. Now, I’m raring to do my next stage play kasi nagustuhan ko talaga ang experience ko rito. I’m also very thankful to ABS-CBN Star Magic for their 100% support, especially sina Tita Mariole Alberto and Thess Gubi as I had to turn down a role in a new teleserye and also some gig offers just to be able to do ‘Rock of Ages’. Buti’t they’re very understanding. Sa previews namin, a lot of Star Magic talents showed up for moral support, pati si Mr. Johnny Manahan. I appreciate all the encouragement I got from them.”
“Rock of Ages” is showing until July 8 at the RCBC Plaza Makati.
