Lovi Poe Sizzles In A Daring Dual Role In 'Guni-Guni'

LOVI POE looks absolutely ravishing in her revealing red gown at the premiere night of “Guni-Guni” at Megamall, which got a B rating from the Cinema Evaluation Board. Jake Cuenca, who’s not part of the movie at all, was there and he got a lot of ribbing from the press people who came to the affair, all saying it’s a confirmation that Lovi and he are really on. “Hindi po, nagbibigay lang po ng suporta,” he insists.

Lovi didn’t let us down as she gives another sterling performance as the tormented heroine who suffers from assorted nightmares. She even has a daring scene where she examines her naked body in front of the mirror. In the end, it turns out to be a dual role and Lovi is particularly good when her avenging twin sister confronts her in the rooftop scene at the film’s climax.

It’s actually Lovi’s first rate performance that redeems the film from the shortcomings of writer-director Tara Illenberger’s own script that left so many unanswered questions. The material is quite difficult to do as it has multiple characters, none of whom may be considered normal and none of whom you can fully sympathize with, including Isay Alvarez who appears in one scene as Lovi’s lunatic mom. And then there’s the fact that there are two, not just one, avenging ghosts.

Aside from Lovi, also giving fine portrayals are Gina Alajar as an alcoholic widow pining for her lost son (Guji Lorenzana), Jimmy Fabregas as the weird landlord with a deadly secret from his own past that haunts him, Ces Quesada as Jimmy’s estranged wife who explains at length what the vengeful ghost in their boarding house really wants, and Julia Clarete as the babysitter of an autistic boy (Gerald Pesigan) who has also committed a crime against her own sister.

Benjamin Alves fares well in his first major role as Lovi’s love interest who turns out to be a rude bastard when she rejects his overtures for them to make out while on a picnic. Later on, he’ll have another love scene with her where she’s the aggressive partner who even goes on top of him, but she turns out to be a doppelganger. Yes, the same macabre element just used by Chito Rono in “The Healing”.
