PANCHO MAGNO is better known now as the son of GMA-7 executive Redgie Magno. But he hopes that one day, he’ll get to establish his own identity separate from his mom, who’s well loved in the industry.
“The truth is ayaw talaga ng mom kong mag-artista ako,” he says. “Kaya nga sabi nila, late bloomer ako kasi last year lang ako nag-showbiz, when I was already 24. By that time, tapos na ko ng nursing sa Global City at the Fort at nakapasa na ko sa board. May aunt kasi ako and cousin sa U.S. who said nursing is a good career. Kaso, nagkaroon ng oversupply of nurses so hindi na sila tumatanggap sa States. Dito sa atin, para makuha ko as a trainee, dapat ikaw pang magbayad sa ospital. It was Atty. Annette Gozon-Abrogar who told my mom na payagan na kong mag-artista. Sinubukan ko naman with supporting roles in ‘Amaya’, ‘Broken Vow’ and ‘Kasalanan Bang Ibigin Ka’. Now, I’m one of the lead actors na in ‘Magdalena’.”
Pancho is the eldest of Ms. Redge. He has a sister who’s 23 and a brother who’s 22. Their mom is separated from their dad who now lives in the States. How does he feel when people say he’s only getting assignments because of his mom? “Well, I can’t blame them. I guess ganun talaga, but the truth is I auditioned for all my roles. I’m not taking it easy naman. Lagi akong nasa acting workshops to improve my craft. And I always try to give my best to prove na worth akong kunin nila. But now, mas kabado ko kasi lead nga ako. At nagpapasalamat akong si Direk Gina Alajar ang director namin kasi alam kong I’m in good hands.”
“Magdalena” will start airing this Monday replacing “Faithfully” that ends tomorrow. Pancho plays the role of Jet, a model who will help title-roler Bela Padilla when she goes into modelling and falls in love with her.
