ARJO ATAYDE is the eldest son of actress Sylvia Sanchez. His real name is Juan Carlos. He got Arjo from his businessman dad Art and Jo is from his mom’s nickname Jojo. He turned 22 last Monday, Nov. 5, but he invited us to dinner only last Tuesday, at his mom’s TJ RestoBar at Scout Borromeo. He was introduced in the fantaserye “E-Boy” and in the “Bangka” episode of “Maalaala Mo Kaya” playing the lead. He’s now nominated as Most Promising TV Personality and best actor, single performance for MMK in the Star Awards for TV to be held on November 18.
He didn’t use his mom’s connections to join showbiz. He just took the auditions for “E-Boy” and “MMK”, and qualified. But because of this, he had to let go of his college studies. “At first, ayaw nga ng dad ko na mag-artista ako, but when he saw my kind of acting, he was convinced na this is my calling kaya pumayag na siya.”
In both “E-Boy” and “MMK”, he played poor boys. They had to alter his mestizo good looks and darken his very fair skin and brown hair that has streaks of white and blonde, especially for MMK where he plays the son of a lowly fisherman. “My mom told me iba kumilos ang mahirap sa mayaman and I think I succeeded naman na magmukhang mahirap. She’s my number one critic. But more than acting, she tells me kung paano makisama ng tama sa mga tao, na you should have respect for all.”
He’s now training for his new show, “Dugong Buhay”, directed by Toto Natividad. An action drama, he and Ejay Falcon play long lost brothers. “I really want to excel in drama like Al Pacino and Edward Norton, but here, may martial arts and parkour training kami for the action scenes.”
Standing 5’11” and quite heavily built, he’s very careful about his diet. “Madali kasi akong tumaba. I have just one heavy meal each day before I jog and work out.”
He has no girlfriend at the moment. “I really want to focus on my career.” Does he expect to win in the Star Awards? “No, but kung mananalo, di salamat. Just being nominated sa single performance alongside Robin Padilla, Piolo Pascual, Gerald Anderson, Phillip Salvador and Nonie Buencamino is already a big honor for me.”
