CALVIN MILLADO is one of our most reliable actors in musical theatre. We have seen him in Broadway shows like “Rent”, “Avenue Q”, “In the Heights”, “Rock of Ages”, “Xanadu”, “Little Mermaid” and he never fails to entertain us. He now alternates with Aiza Seguerra as the genie in Atlantis Productions’ “Aladdin”, with Tom Rodriguez in the title role, to be shown at Meralco Theatre starting November 16.
A former basketball player at San Beda where he has a business degree, he started in showbiz as a ramp model then his talent for singing was discovered. He also did TV hosting for a while. He’s happily married now to Mary Catherine and they have a son, Raphael Santi, 8 years old, and daughter, Maya, 4, who was with him at the “Aladdin” presscon and she looks like his female version. So how’s it playing genie?
“This is one of my hardest roles to date,” he says. “Kasi it requires a lot of dancing. Bandang gitna pa lang, I’m so tired feeling ko I won’t last. Mukha akong Baby Damulag na sumasayaw, pero I have to project na feeling ko, I’m the best dancer in the world kahit clumsy ako.”
This is his 11th musical for Bobby Garcia’s Atlantis. Which is the most memorable? “’Rocky Horror Picture Show’ as I played the role of a transvestite. I had the most fun in doing it. In August, we’re also doing a replay of ‘Rock of Ages’ with Mig Ayesa in it once more.”
How’s Tom Rodriguez as Aladdin? “It’s his first time to do theatre but his instincts work well on stage. He does his homework and is open to suggestions from us in the wings, even with his singing. He listens and is definitely leading man material. Ang ganda ng chemistry nila ni K-La Rivera as Jasmine on stage.”
