Local Film Aficionados Should Support The 13 New Film Entries Of Cinema One Originals

CINEMA ONE ORIGINALS opens today at Robinson’s Galleria and tomorrow at EDSA Shangrila Plaza with 13 new original movies divided into Category A with a grant of P2 million and Category B with P1 million. The three films in Category A are: “Baybayin” – Written and directed by Auraeus Solito, it’s set in El Nido, Palawan starring Assunta and Alessandra de Rossi as half sisters who fall in love with a deaf mute (Adrian Sebastian) who communicates only through an ancient Palawanon script called Baybayin.

“Mater Dolorosa” – Written by Jerry Gracio and directed by Adolf Alix, it stars Gina Alajar in the title role of a crime family matriarch, with Cogie Domingo, Alex de Rossi, Carlo Aquino, Joem Bascon, Mercedes Cabral and Phillip Salvador.

“Mariposa sa Hawla ng Gabi” – Directed by Richard Somes, it stars Erich Gonzales as Maya, a woman looking for her missing sister in the city in 1994. With Alfred Vargas, Mark Gil, Joel Torre, Maria Isabel Lopez and Rez Cortez.

The 10 films in Category B are: “Aberya” – Written and directed by Christian Linaban (his debut), it’s about 4 anti-heroes: Will Devaughn, Iwa Moto, Mercedes Cabral and Nicholas Varela. It tackles taboo issues like sex, drugs, religion and activism.

“Anak-Araw” – Written and directed by Gym Lumbera (his debut), it’s about an albino (anak-araw) searching for his identity in a town in Taal Lake. Shot in black and white, it has a cast of unknowns.

“Paglalakbay ng mga Bituin sa Gabing Madilim” – Written and directed by Arnel Mardoquio, it also has unknown stars and presents the intricacies of the Bangsa Moro struggle in Mindanao through the story of three Muslim rebels.

“Catnip” – Written and directed by Kevin Dayrit (his debut), it’s about a shy girl who finds a friend in another girl who livens up her dull world. Stars Lauren Young, Maxene Magalona, Rommel Luna, Ramon Bautista and Megan Young.

“EDSA XXX” – A musical from Director Khavn de la Cruz, it’s a homage to Pinoy B movies and a tribute to Dolphy. Shot entirely in Corregidor, it’s 12 years in the making and stars Epy Quizon, Althea Vega, Sheree and Bong Cabrera.

“Mamay Umeng” – Written and directed by Dwein Baltazar, it stars non-professional actors and is about an old man who wants nothing but to end his long life in San Juan, Batangas.

“Melodrama Negra” – Written and directed by Ma. Isabel Legarda (her debut), it’s about fortunate people who have both power and freedom to do as they please. Starring Gee Canlas, Jerald Napoles, Bong Cabrera, Mara Lopez, Cai Cortez and Bembol Roco.

“Palitan” – This is Director Ato Bautista’s tribute to “Scorpio Nights”, written by Shugo Praico. Stars Alex Medina, a debt-ridden loser who allows his boss, Mon Confiado, to borrow his common law wife, Mara Lopez.

“Pascalina” – Written and directed by Pam Miras (her debut), it’s about a woman, Pascalina (Veronica Santiago), who gets news that an aunt is dying but can’t die unless she passes on an “aswang” curse, which pushes her to the edge of insanity. Also starring Peewee O’Hara and Alex Medina.

“Slumber Party” – Directed by Emman de la Cruz, it’s about three gay boys watching the 2010 Miss Universe Pageant when a young frat boy gatecrashes on them and they hold him captive. Stars Markki Storem, Archie Alemania and RK Bagatsing as the gays and Sef Cayadona as the gatecrasher.
