Public Attorney Persida Acosta Says She'S Not 'Showbiz Na Showbiz'

ATTY. PERSIDA RUEDA ACOSTA’s show, “Public Atorni: Asunto o Areglo”, has made her familiar to the public. Its replays are now being shown weeknights on TV5’s Aksyon TV. The show has won several awards for public service, including the Gawad Tanglaw, Star Award, Catholic Mass Media, Gawad America and the FAMAS Exemplary Achievement Award. Tagged as “Attorney of the People”, some folks tried to convince her to run for the senate but she felt she still wants to serve at the Public Attorney’s Office where they offer free legal counselling to poor clients.

She always wants to be more active in healing behind bars that’s why she conducts free medical and dental visits and works for the decongestion of crowded jails. She also fights for children’s rights on legitimation and acknowledgment. Recently, she worked for the temporary release of political prisoner in Samar, poet and former Collegian editor Ericson Acosta, so he can seek medical treatment for his kidneys at NKTI. What can she say about some people saying she is now “showbiz na showbiz”?

“Hindi naman. I’m doing this to promote the Public’s Attorney’s Office and our advocacy of mediation,” she says. “May offers nga sa’kin to do special appearance sa movies but I want to make sure muna it won’t be in conflict with my duties in the government.”

Atty. Acosta’s husband is also a lawyer who’s now one of the “tagapayos” in “Face to Face”. They met while classmates in law review class and now have two daughters, Kayla, 20 years old, taking up psychology at Ateneo, and Kamilla, 15, 3rd year high school at Diliman Prep.
