“Hindi naman,” he says. “I’m just really trying my best to show that I deserve all the good breaks they’re giving me. Hindi ako nagko-complain kahit wala akong tulog. Gaya ngayon, four days na ko walang tulog. Taping ng ‘Paroa’, then diretso sa taping ng ‘Vampire’, the next day ‘Paroa’ uli at tapos guesting naman sa ‘Pepito Manaloto’ with Bea and Julie Ann San Jose.”
Didn’t he feel any insecurity when Protegee discovery Ruru Madrid was included in the cast of “Paroa” to be his rival over Barbie? “No, I wasn’t threatened at all. Ako pa nga ang unang naging kaibigan ni Ruru kasi first regular show niya ito. Tulong-tulong lang kami lahat sa ikagaganda ng show.”
He was 15 when he joined showbiz, standing 5’10”. Now, at 17, he already stands 6 feet flat. “I’m now trying to develop my physique. I play basketball, I do boxing and workout in the gym.”
So what’s the real score between him and Barbie. Is it true he gave her an expensive bracelet as Valentine gift? “No. Flowers lang ang binigay ko. Isang bouquet of different flowers. Wala naman akong pambibili ng expensive bracelet dahil may hinuhulugan akong new car.”
Derrick is also a regular in “Party Pilipinas” and he has started recording his debut album for Dyna Records. “My first song is an original love song, ‘Giliw’. Excited ako kasi ang ganda ng melody and lyrics.” He sang the first few lines of the song for us and everyone thinks it’s a potential hit.
