MARIAN RIVERA plays a totally endearing role in her new movie, “My Lady Boss”. She’s Evelyn, the terror boss of Richard Gutierrez who plays Zach. She looks like a forbidding schoolmarm with her big eyeglasses. You’d think she’s rich and strict but, the truth is, she’s poor and soft-hearted. It’s Richard who’s very rich but is forced by his grandpa, Ronaldo Valdez, to work for the first time so he’d learn more about the dignity of labor.
Marian comes from a working class family and she’s the breadwinner, with a younger brother she sends to school and a married older brother whose family depends on her. It’s easy to guess that an unlikely romance set in their office will eventually bloom between Evelyn and Zach.
The film is helmed by young director Jade Castro, best known for acclaimed indie hits “Endo” and “Zombadings”. The first team up of Marian and Richard was five years ago, “My Best Friend’s Girlfriend”, a blockbuster. There’s undeniable chemistry between them and we know their second outing together will similarly be successful.
Aside from Ronaldo, they’re supported in the film by Starstruck recruits Dion Ignacio as Marian’s older brother, Rocco Nacino as an officemate and Ruru Madrid as Marian’s younger brother, Tom Rodriguez as Marian’s ex-boyfriend, Maricel Laxa as Marian’s superior, Sandy Andolong as Marian’s mom, Jackielou Blanco as Richard’s mom, Sef Cadayona as another officemate and introducing internet celeb Petra Halimuyak.
How is “My Lady Boss” different from their first teamup in “My Best Friend’s Girlfriend” five years ago? “This is definitely more mature, more daring, marami kasi kaming kissing scenes,” she says.
Didn’t she have second thoughts about it since her BF Dingdong Dantes might frown on it? “When the cameras roll, hindi na kami sina Marian at Richard dito, we are the characters we play. Sa buong buhay ko, tatlong lalaki pa lang ang nakahalikan ko. Si Dong, tapos si Dennis Trillo in ‘Temptation of Wife’ and now, si Chard dito sa ‘My Lady Boss’. We’re all very professional in doing our kissing scenes. Trabaho lang lahat.”
Why did it take five years before they had a followup movie when the first one was such a big hit? “We’re both busy with other projects at hindi mag-swak yung schedules namin. Hindi rin naman magandang pinipilit kasi baka half-baked lumabas. Now, heto, dumating yung right time and the right project for us to team up again and we’re all so happy kasi magandang-maganda ang kinalabasan.”
“My Lady Boss” opens in theatres on April 10. Soon after that, Marian’s primetime soap, “Temptation of Wife”, will also end. So will she have time to rest now? “Hindi rin, magsu-shoot pa ko ng ‘Kung Fu Divas’ namin ni Ate Ai Ai de las Alas. Trabaho pa rin.”
