MARTIN NIEVERA’s late night talk show is back on air at ABS-CBN but was aired without any fanfare. “I just want people to feel like it didn’t go off the air at all,” he says. “For the pilot episode, we did two tapings. In one, guests sina former sweethearts Cristine Reyes and Rayver Cruz. In another, si KC Concepcion. The staff chose the KC episode to air first kasi mas kilala ko na si KC since we worked together in ‘X Factor Philippines’. Now, some folks are asking me to make it every night, but walang space ang ABS, e. Punong-puno sila. But I really love doing this. I want to grow old doing this, like Johnny Carson or David Letterman.”
His eldest son Robin is older than Gary V’s own eldest, Paolo. But Paolo has already gotten married and Robin remains single. “My sons have no girlfriend,” he says.
They obviously didn’t take after their dad who has a more colorful lovelife. “Thank God nga na hindi sila nagmana sa’kin. They’re very smart. Their mom and I are not great examples of what marriage should be. And before they get married, I’d suggest mag-ipon-ipon muna sila. Sa marriage naman, walang right age for getting married. The question is: are you ready? Emotionally, financially, etc. It’s a big responsibility. Kung ngayon sila mag-aasawa, I’d be the first to say they’re not ready. Kami lang ni Pops ang gagastos diyan. When Robin had his recent concert, titled ‘Nightmare’, Pops and I were like production people busy helping him out. He’s just starting his career now.”
At their Valentine “Foursome” concert, the audience laughed when Pops said he’s very good in “packing”. Not with an “F” but packing their things, their luggage. He admits having OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), like Jack Nicholson in “As Good As It Gets”. “I’m really at good fixing things. Pops is very magulo with her things. I’m the one who makes ligpit everything. But all those funny things we said in the concert, they’re all unrehearsed, huh. Spontaneous yun. We don’t know kung mauulit yun sa repeat ng concert namin on March 16 at the MOA Arena. But we’re coming up with some new production numbers, with Gary V joining us this time.”
