Newcomer Sandino Martin plays a bi-polar gay in Jay Alterejos film "unfriend"

THOSE WHO’RE wondering what happened to Director Jay Altarejos after he suddenly left “Legacy” at GMA-7 last year will be pleased to know that he has just completed directing a new full length film, “Unfriend”. Jay is best known for such hit pink films as “Ang Lalake sa Parola” and “Lihim ni Antonio”.

His new work, “Unfriend”, stars Angelo Ilagan (of “Sarung Bangi”) and new actor Sandino Martin who plays a bi-polar young man confused about his sexual identity in the story inspired by a real life incident about a homosexual student shooting his lover in a mall in Pampanga. His co-star in “Piaf”, Pinky Amador, says he is the new Coco Martin.

Sandino is 22 years old, a UP graduate majoring in theatre arts. He has done plays with Dulaang UP and PETA. He loves doing musical theatre as he sings well and enjoys the experience of both singing and acting on stage. In “Piaf”, he plays different roles, including Piaf’s last husband.

“It’s very challenging,” he says. “I even had to learn how to speak in French. But the experience is very enriching, especially when you’re working with seasoned actors like Pinky Amador, Ima Castro and Jamie Wilson. Pinky was at first intimidating but she turned out to be very nice and down to earn and even gave me tips about my performance that really helped me a lot.”

“Piaf” will have its final weekend at the RCBC Theatre in Makati from March 22 to 24.
