IMA CASTRO has played lead roles in Atlantis Productions musicals like “Aida” and “In the Heights” but she doesn’t mind giving support to Pinky Amador in “Piaf”. “Pinky is superb as Piaf and I’m happy to be her best friend in the show,” she says. “Also, mine is a non-singing role. First time ko to do this kasi lahat ng plays ko since ‘Miss Saigon’, kumakanta ako. And I’m really learning so much from Pinky. Actually, I’m so scared to do this kasi it’s out of my comfort zone. But I’m glad our director Bobby Garcia trusted me that I can do this, yung iba-iba ang nuances. Ang nakakatawa, two weeks into the rehearsals, doon pa nawala ang voice ko, kung kailan ako hindi kumakanta. Iba kasi yung vocal muscles na ginagamit mo sa pagkanta kaysa sa your normal speaking voice.”
Ima is also in the cast of “The Full Monty” where she plays the wife of Jamie Wilson. “Doon, kakanta na uli ako. Bale while we’re performing in ‘Piaf’, nagre-rehearse naman kami for ‘Full Monty’, so they’ll overlap.”
Ima was once married to a British actor but they’ve since divorced. Any new romance? “Wala. Nagsara na nga, e. Virgin na uli ako,” she laughs.
