CANNES FILMFEST best director Dante Mendoza and Sen. Loren Legarda have teamed up before for the informative environmental docu, “Buhos”, about climate change. They’re now together again with the instructional video, “Ligtas”, based on Loren’s manual “Gabay sa Kahandaan sa Sakuna at Paunang Lunas” that’s a project of the Senate Committee on Climate Change.
Loren gave the Dante full creative freedom to choose his own scriptwriter and crew to do the docu. The various calamities tackled are earthquakes, tsunami, volcanic eruption, typhoons, floods, storm surge, thunderstorms, tornados, landslides and man-made disasters like fire or faulty structures crumbling down. It also has a list of hotlines you can call in emergency cases and some first aid tips.
The video shows Loren having hands on participation in relief operations during disastrous typhoons like Winnie, Ondoy, Sendong in Cagayan de Oro, Habagat and Pablo in Davao Oriental. The 30-minutes video will be shown on Earth Day, April 22. “It’ll be shown for free in various cinemas,” says Loren. “I’ll also donate DVD copies to all schools and barangays, plus you can see it in my website and on youtube.”
She seems so busy, how about her lovelife now that she’s being linked to another senator? “It’s not true. My aim is zero casualty sa disasters and what I have is zero lovelife.”
As the number one senatorial bet in the surveys, what else does she plan to achieve in her next term at the senate? “I want to institute a pan-tuition scholarshipprogram that will help the poorest of the poor to send even just one member to school to get a college degree. I also want to have a community folk art museum or room in every province to bring back pride to our people. I’m doing this with the help of National Artist F. Sionil Jose. Of course, tuloy-tuloy ang pagle-lecture natin about climate change and disaster risk reduction in various barangays and schools throughout the country.”
