Alfred Vargas' Winning As Best Actor In Golden Screen Is A Vindication For Him

WE’RE SO HAPPY that Alfred Vargas won best actor at the recent Golden Screen Awards for his memorable portrayal of Andres Bonifacio in “Ang Supremo”. This is a vindication for his being ignored by other award-giving bodies whose list of winners lack credibility. Alfred actually got two awards that night. He was also given the Dekada award for stars who won in the Golden Screen twice. Ten years ago, Alfred won the best new movie actor award for “Bikini Open”. His best actor trophy after ten years is a fulfilment of the promise shown in that first award. So what’s his next film project?

“I like to do the filmbio of Tandang Sora, na ako pa rin ang gaganap,” he jokes. “Honestly, rest muna ako sa acting. I’m now busy campaigning as congressman for the 5th district of Quezon City and I’m happy to report na ako ang nangunguna sa surveys with a rating of 51.3% samantalang yung mga kalaban kong kandidato got only 21%, 18% and 4 % each. It can only mean na nagustuhan ng mga tao ang serbisyo ko sa nakaraang tatlong taon as councilor. Everywhere I go now to campaign, grabe ang warmth ng mga tao sa pagtanggap sa akin. Nakakawala ng pagod kasi mahirap talagang mangampanya ng house to house sa init ng summer natin. Nang pasukin ko ang public service, talagang I have to sacrifice my showbiz career. But acting is my passion. May new offer nga for me to do a teleserye. Siguro later this year, tatanggap na uli ako ng bagong show. I also intend to produce another serious movie and I’m going to ask Chris Martinez to do it kasi bilib ako sa talent niya as a filmmaker.”

Despite his busy schedule, Alfred is doing his best to finish his master’s degree in public administration at UP. “Two semesters na lang ako.” And also, he always finds time for his wife Yasmine and their two pretty daughters. “Siempre, top priority ko pa rin ang family ko.”
