WE’VE ALWAYS known Chanda Romero as a free spirit. Unlike her contemporary Beth Oropesa, who has been married several times, she has never tied the knot with anyone.Chanda was introduced in 1973 giving support to Vilma Santos in “Dyesebel” and “Lipad Darna Lipad”. She did other movies before being launched as a sexy star in the controversial “Mga Uhaw na Bulaklak”, which was banned by the censors then. She was launched solo by the late Lino Brocka in “Mananayaw” with Phillip Salvador, where she got a best actress nomination. She won the Urian best supporting actress award for “Boy Pana”.
Other important films where she played lead were “Sa Kagubatan ng Lungsod”, “Kahit Mundo’y Magunaw”, her films with Danny Zialcita “Ang Biyuda ay Misteryosa” and “Kapag Tumabang ang Asin”, Elwood Perez’ “Divorce Pilipino Style”, Eddie Romero’s “Banta ng Kahapon” and Laurice Guillen’s “Kasal?” On TV, she can free lance in all channels. After doing “MMK” for ABS-CBN, she did “Kidlat” for TV5 and is now earning praises as Sinag, the understanding mother of the gay Eric (Dennis Trillo), in “My Husband’s Lover”.
On May 17, she faced the altar with Jose Mari Alejandrino or Mayi, her boyfriend of seven years. What’s sad is that the groom’s dad, Bro. Juan Alejandrino, founder of the Mama Mary Movement, just passed on May 10. They decided to go on with their commitment ceremony at a chapel in Tagaytay with the urn of the ashes of Mayi’s dad also at altar. Chanda was given away by her good friend, scriptwriter Ricky Lee. They plan to have a civil wedding later on. To the newlyweds, our congratulations and best wishes!
