CHILD STAR IZZY CANILLO gained stardom playing the young Coco Martin in “My Little Juan”, a hit on ABS-CBN’s afternoon shows. Born on March 3, 2004, his real name is John Izzy (pronounced like Icy and not Easy) Canillo, the second of five kids. He has an elder sister, 11, and two younger brothers aged 5 and 3, and his youngest sister is 2 years old. He was discovered when he joined Star Circle Quest (SCQ) for Kids in 2009, where he was first runner up to Bugoy Carino.
He became part of “Goin’ Bulilit” and “Kulilits”, appeared in various shows as young Coco Martin in “Kung Tayo’y Magkakalayo”, young Zanjoe Marudo in “The Wedding”, young Jolo Revilla in “Binondo Girl”, and also in “Mula sa Puso”, “Impostor”, “Mara Clara”, “Mana Po”, “Guns and Roses”, “Mutya”, “Princess and I”, “Toda Max” and various episodes of “Maalaala Mo Kaya” and “Wansapanataym”.
“Dream ko po talaga, magbida sa sarili kong show like ni Kuya Zaijian (Jaranilla),” he says. “Eto po, natupad na dito sa ‘My Little Juan’. Dahil dito, kahit saan po ako magpunta, may nagpapa-picture na sa’kin.”
They used to live in Makati but because of his earnings in showbiz his dad, also named John, was able to buy a house and lot in Gen. Trias, Cavite. His dad used to be a cook in a 5-star hotel but now acts as his driver-bodyguard. They plan to open their own carinderia and bakery business in Cavite. It was Izzy himself who urged his mom to take him to ABS-CBN to audition in SCQ.
“Gusto niya kasi, magkaroon kami ng sariling bahay,” his dad says. “E, maraming nagsasabi sa kanya, mag-artista na lang, kasi pogi siya, kaya ayun, kinulit ang mama niyang dalhin siya sa ABS at sinuwerte naman.”
He tapes four times a week for “My Little Juan” but he doesn’t neglect his studies. He’s now in grade 4 at the home study program of Angelicum College, with Math as his favorite subject. And starting tomorrow, July 8, there will be a “Juan de la Cruz Revolution” to mark the beginning of many changes on local TV’s favorite superhero with the introduction of a new character, a new weapon and a new mission for Filipino kids called Juan Fun School Day. Izzy is calling out on a Kapamilyas to help and join this project that aims to help poor students by giving them different kinds of school supplies. Just watch “My Little Juan”, weekdays at 2:45 PM after “Showtime”. For more info, log on to abs-cbn.com or follow abs-cbn.com on Twitter.
