WE FIRST MET Daniel Padilla in 2009 at the birthday presscons that Star Magic used to hold then. We interviewed him with Manay Ethel Ramos whose first question to him was: “Tuli ka na ba?” And he replied: “Opo.” He was very trusting and immediately told us he’s Karla Estrada’s son with Rommel Padilla and he has three siblings with different dads. He was included in “Gimik 2010” but it was in “Growing Up” that he gained a lot of fans as the resident bad boy. His love team with Kathryn Bernardo hit it big in “The Princess and I”.
We first met Daniel’s mom, Karla Estrada, at the presscon of “First Time Like a Virgin” where she was introduced by Regal Films along with Sunshine Cruz and Shirley Fuentes in 1992. She was given a starring role in “Kakaibang Karisma” in 1995 and, that year, she gave birth to Daniel. Her career understandably suffered and from then on, we’d see her on TV every now and then, doing soaps like “Saan Ka Man Naroroon” and “Sa Dulo ng Walang Haggan” on ABS-CBN and “Daisy Siete”, “Magdusa Ka” and “Alakdana” on GMA-7.
Now, mother and son are together for the first time as the first celebrity endorsers of Lily’s Peanut Butter, a brand that has been around Filipino households for 60 years. They got Karla and Daniel as the their campaign is about bonding between people who share a love that is “walang katulad”. Do they really use Lily’s?
“Oo naman, walang etchos yan,” says Karla. “As I was growing up in Tacloban, gamit na namin ang Lily’s pati sa kare-kare since time immemorial. Noong nag-aaral na si Daniel, favorite baon niya ang sandwich na may Lily’s peanut butter from grade 1 to grade 4. Very affordable kasi, perfet pa ang lasa and now, they have other variants like chocolate peanut butter, crunchy peanut butter at coco jam kaya gusto ng buong pamilya. Nang kontakin kami ng Lily’s to endorse them, excited kami kasi first time namin magkatrabahong mag-ina at first time kong magkaroon ng ganitong TV commercial.”
What is Karla’s one advice to him that Daniel can’t forget? “Iisa lang, gabi-gabi inuulit niya sa’kin: ‘Huwag kang magpapasama ng loob ng tao.’ Sinusunod ko naman yun.”
What’s Daniel’s biggest achievement for Karla? “Marami, pero biggest yung nagpapagawa na siya ng sariling bahay. Kasi dream ko yan noon pa, pero siya pala ang magbibigay ng katuparan.”
