MARA LOPEZ has come out of her mom Maria Isabel Lopez’ shadow when she won as Cinema One best actress last year as the beleaguered young wife who takes revenge on her oppressors in “Palitan”. Now, she’s in the cast of two new films. She plays Saling, the mysterious woman of the forest with a deep dark secret in the Cinemalaya entry, “Debosyon”, where her lines are all in Bicolano. In the CineFilipino entry, “Kuwento ni Mabuti”, she plays Nora Aunor’s daughter and all their lines are in Ilocano.
“Ang galing nga, both roles are very challenging,” she says. “I have dialogue coaches in both films to make sure na tama ang pronunciation for ng aking Bicol and Ilocano lines.”
Just like in “Palitan” where she went daring, she also has a hot love scene with Paulo Avelino in “Debosyon”. “He plays Mando, a man from the lowlands who gathers orchids in the forest of Mayon Volcano so he can sell them. Very hot din ang love scene namin but this is not a sexy film. It’s actually a religious film about faith, where things are not what they seem. That’s all I can reveal kasi yung character ko dito, ginamitan pa ng CGI special effects. Kakaiba talaga siya.”
Mara’s career is really on role as she also co-stars with Lovi Poe in GMA News TV’s serial, “Titser”. “Lovi and I are best friends and young teachers with Agot Isidro as our mentor. I’m paired here with Carl Guevarra. It’s directed by Alvin Yapan, also my director in ‘Debosyon’, and will start its telecast this August and will be aired for one hour every Sunday night. Then I have another new movie, ‘Kabaro’, directed by Jun Posadas who directed me as a child actress years ago. This movie is about lesbian gay rights. I auditioned and nakuha ako to play a lesbian role.”
What does her mom say when she does nude love scenes? “Wala. She helps manage me with Ferdie Lapuz. Basta she’s proud of my work, especially when I won as best actress. She’s also busy now doing a new movie with Alex Medina for Cinema One filmfest and they’re also shooting it in Bicol.”
