JON SANTOS NOW has his own regular clientele who follows him in all the one-man comedy shows he does. He’s now a regular at Teatrino Greenhills. “Yun talaga ang venue best for me,” he says. “An intimate crowd. Hindi ako pang-Araneta Coliseum like Ai Ai or Vice Ganda. Gusto ko yung nakikita ko agad ang audience kung nabo-bore na ba sila. You should know your crowd kasi iba ang jokes na pang-Makati at iba rin for those who go to comedy bars that bank on the spur of the moment banter ng hosts sa mga nilalait na contestants sa singalong. Hindi rin ako puede doon sa libu-libo ang audience kasi iba-iba na wavelengths niyan. I do a lot of political comedy na scripted, memorized and rehearsed, at may mga suki na ako dyan na they keep coming back kasi siguro yung hinahanap nilang template, they find it in me. ”
During the presscon, Jon impersonated Charice as Chareez Penpendesarapengco, Ann Curtis as Ann Lakas ng Loob Curtis, Vilma Santos in “Ekstra” as Ekstra Rice and its sequel, Ekstra Terrestial. “Extra po ang role ko rito , pero ako talaga ang bida,” he quips. “Start na po ito ng Hollywood career ko. Gagawa kami ni Brad Pitt ng sequel sa ‘World War Z’, ang ‘World War Z & Vi na bida mga zom-vi. Gagawin ko rin ang ‘Despicable Vi’, kasama ang mga Vi-nions kaya ako’y vi-sing-vi-si.”
This week, Jon is joining Sarah Geronimo’s concert tour in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, Australia. When he returns, he’ll do ‘Man of Steel-ettos’ at Teatrino on September 13, 14, 27 and 28 at 8 PM, highlighted by his SONA (spoof of the nation address) with its latest congressional hearings, investigations, sex video scandal and other headline making stories.
Jon is the first gay icon to have admitted in public that he had a gay marriage in the U.S. with his partner, Wes Stewart. “Bale 8 years na kami. We’re now so comfortable with each other. Tanggap na ko ng mother niya. Dati, Mrs. Stewart pa tawag ko, but now, Mommy na. It evolved slowly. Just like my outing myself to my family. Tinitimpla yang mabuti, hinahaluan ng dasal. Inuna ko muna mga kapatid ko, then my parents, na dinala ko sa Manila Pen lobby para hindi sila umeksena kung magagalit sila.”
Two showbiz personalities will have a gay marriage in New York in October, Perci Intalan of TV5 and writer-director Jun Lana of GMA-7. Any message for them? “I’m happy for any couple in love who are taking a step to build a life together. I wish them the best so that they can survive the scrutiny of public opinion. Ako, I’m blessed kasi the media was kind to me and people were actually supportive to Wes and me. I think Filipinos are a gentler and kinder race when it comes to these things. But just like any other relationship, hindi yan magic, you have to work on it.”
What can he say about the success of a gay soap like “My Husband’s Lover”? “Totoo ang mga sitwasyon. It’s real. Balak ko nga to spoof it later.” What about BB Gandanghari? “I’m so happy that accepted na siya ni Robin Padilla. Kasi yun talaga dapat mauna, ang siblings mo. Ako, I’m really happy my family accepted me right away.”
For tickets to “Man of Steel-ettos”, call Music Museum (721-6726) and Viva Concerts (678-7236).
