WE ASKED “Babagwa” producer, Atty. Joji Alonso of Quantum Films, why she scheduled the theatrical release of the movie on September 18 when it’ll be up against the mainstream comedy “Momzillas” and the opening of TV5’s CineFilipino festival that has eight new local movies in its lineup.
“When we scheduled this on September 18, kami pa lang ang naka-booked on this date,” she says. “Tapos, pumasok sila. E, hindi na ako makaatras to October kasi we will be up against some big Hollywood films like ‘Thor’ and ‘Hunger Games’, kaya hindi na kami umurong sa September 18. Nagkaroon naman ng sariling following ang ‘Babagwa’ due to positive word of mouth sa mga nakapanood when it was shown in Cinemalaya, so I’m confident na marami pa ring gustong manood nito sa regular theatres. The story about people who deceive other people through social media is something a lot of people can relate to nowadays. It’s also a cautionary tale about being too trusting to strangers na nakilala mo lang sa Facebook.”
Aside from Alex Medina and Chanel Latorre, the movie also stars Alma Concepcion as the object of Alex’s affection, Kiko Matos as Alex’ alter ego on the internet, Joey Paras who won as best supporting actor as Alex’ partner in crime and Nico Antonio as the new guy at the gym who becomes the new scammer. After “Babagwa”, Atty. Joji will also help in the wide release of “Sana Dati”, the best picture winner in the Directors Showcase category that stars Lovi Poe, Paulo Avelino, Benjamin Alves, and TJ Trinidad who won as best supporting actor.
