MARKKI STROEM surprised a lot of people with his nude love scenes with Althea Vega in the Cinemalaya entry, “Amor y Muerte”. He now goes back to singing and theatre in Atlantis Productions’ “Carrie”, the musical version of Stephen King’s thriller about a girl oppressed by her mom and her high school classmates who get even with her tormentors through her telekinetic powers.
“I play the role of Tommy, the kind guy who takes Carrie to the prom,” he says. “I get to sing a solo song, ‘Dream in Disguise’, which is perfect for my character as Tommy is a poet but he hides it because he’s also a sports jock.”
It’s the first time for “Carrie” to be produced outside of America and the writer of its book, Lawrence Cohen, is flying to Manila tomorrow to watch their final rehearsal and give his inputs before the opening night this coming Friday. “We’re all excited and nervous,” says Markki. “We hope he’ll like what we’ve done with his musical.”
About his nudity in “Amor y Muerte”, did he somehow regret it? “No, no regrets. I did it for art’s sake. Every film, every show you do is a learning experience. It helps you grow. My co-stars in it helped me a lot, especially the late Ama Quiambao. I was daring there but I also did a wholesome movie, ‘Raketeros’, with Mayor Herbert Bautista that was shown at the same time. Now, I’m doing ’10,000 Hours’ with Robin Padilla. It’s an entry in the Metro filmfest and I play his drug addicted son. Si Mylene Dizon ang mom ko rito. The movie naman I did for CinemaOne Digitals, ‘Slumber Party’, where I play a gay designer, will have a wide release on December 5. May offer for another movie but I wasn’t able to accept it kasi nga committed na ko sa ‘Carrie’ and I’m also guesting in Zia Quizon’s birthday concert at Music Museum on September 22. I’ll also be a guest model sa Cosmo Bash at World Trade Center. In ‘Carrie’, I’m happy to be reunited with Menchu Lauchengco Yulo with whom I appeared in my first musical, ‘Next to Normal’. She’s so good as Mikkie’s mom. And Mikkie herself is excellent in her first lead role as Carrie. Marami siyang pahahangain dito.”
“Carrie” opens at the RCBC Plaza Carlos Romulo Theatre in Makati this Friday and will run until October 6, sponsored by MetroBank and Delta Airlines. For tickets, call Atlantis at 892-7078 or Ticketworld at 891-9999.
