The Hits And Flops Of The Recent U.S. Summer Movie Season

THE U.S. SUMMER season has ended and the total ticket sales for films they released this year surpassed the past year. Do you want to find out what were their biggest hits and flops?

The hits are: “Iron Man 3” - This film cost $200 million to make and has grossed $1.2 billion worldwide. “Despicable Me 2” – It cost $75 million and made $806 million worldwide, bigger than the first movie. to date. “The Purge” – A flop here in Manila but in terms of ratio of budget to box office, this is probably the year's biggest hit as it cost just $3 million to make but earned $84 million worldwide. “The Conjuring” - Made for just $20 million, this film took in over $240 million worldwide. “Monsters University” - It cost $200 million to make, and has taken in $687 million worldwide. “Man of Steel” – It earned around $650 million worldwide. It cost around $225 million to make. “This is the End” – Not yet released in Manila. Seth Rogen's apocalyptic comedy was another huge surprise smash. Just in the U.S. alone, it's taken in over three times its production budget, although it's not done any business overseas because a lot of the celebrity-culture humor is not familiar to foreign audiences. “World War Z” – The movie version of Max Brooks' zombie classic was predicted to fail but it triumphed, making $526 million worldwide. It reportedly cost $190 million to make. “Star Trek Into Darkness” – It cost $190 million and has earned a respectable $459 million worldwide. “The Wolverine” –Budget is #125 million. It has earned $351 million in global box office. “Epic” – Made for $100 million, it hit a decent $253 million . “Smurfs 2” – It’s not as big a hit as the first movie, but it's taken in $235 million and it only cost a reported $105 million to make, so it's already a pretty respectable hit. “Pacific Rim” - Made for $190 million, this film grossed only $100 million domestically and around $400 million worldwide.

And here are the flops. “R.I.P.D.” - The biggest flop of the summer, and quite possibly of the year. This film cost $130 million to make and barely took in $61 million worldwide. “The Lone Ranger” – Budget is $250 million, it made just $230 million worldwide. “Turbo” – This animated movie about a snail cost $135 million to make and pulled in only $148 million worldwide. “After Earth” - Made for $130 million, it bombed in the U.S. and has earned only about $183 million worldwide. “Percy Jackson: The Sea of Monsters” – Definitely pales in comparison to the first one. Made for $90 million, it has made only $55 million. “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” – Made for $60 million, it made only $24 million so far.
